Silver Surfers Embrace Social Media

A growing number of older people are taking advantage of social networking sites, according to a new study.

Pew Internet discovered in a report that the number of people aged over 50 who use social networking websites such as Twitter and Facebook has nearly doubled from 22 per cent in April 2009 to 42 per cent in May 2010.

Mary Madden, author of the report, said: “Many older users now rely on social network platforms to help manage their daily communications.”

Website owners may want to tailor their web design to entice elderly visitors after reading this report while others, me included, could be more concerned about embarrassing and incriminating photos on social media sites.

Hopefully grandmas and granddads everywhere will be checking out the web design London work of PureBlue on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Twitter hit the headlines again this weekend after England cricket Kevin Pietersen used the site to reveal the news he had been dropped despite being banned from Tweeting.

The batsman Tweeted: “Yep. Done for rest of summer!! Man of the World Cup T20 and dropped from the T20 side too…”

I had to cut the Tweet short as Pietersen let his emotions get the better of him with rather a rude word.

It is recommended not to include expletives in your web design content as this will likely alienate the more sensitive internet users and lose traffic.
